The History of Typography

The first font invented was Blackletter but because it was too dense Roman Type was created in 15th century by Jenson. It was cleaner than Blackletter, but there was a problem of print. The next innovation: Italics Roman, allowed people to use more words on the same paper, yet saving money on print.

Then Caslon invented what we called Old Style (having fix Serifs), Baskerville(invented in Birmingham) drawn the 'Transitional' having thin Serifs and then, what we called 'Modern' was invented by Didot ad Bodoni, the font having very thin Serifs.

Caslon IV invented Sans Serif but the development just began. For the posters and advertisement it was invented Egyptian and then Helvetica, the most famous font in the world.

Interesting Typography

Final Business Card

I decided to make a simple business card. From my point of view this version is the one that represents me. I kept the same colours palette as in the CV. I used Neutra Display - Light and Medium
For the 'CA' logo I used Illustrator. I used Neutra Display font.

Business Card Experiments

For my first experiment I used Minion Pro font and I used different types of Bold and Italic.

For the 'CA' logo I used OCR A Std
 A - 40 pt.
C- 50 pt.

My second experiment was based on my CV.
I tried to use the same colours, font and style as in my CV.
Thus, I used Helvetice (with different sized, Bold), Neue LT Std and Neutra Display.
I also used Gradient in order to make it more interactive.
The 'CA'  is written with Neutra Display.

Experiment with types

I typed my name with different types to decide what font I will use for my Business Card.

First step - Experiments with basic fonts

Palace Script MT - Regular

Viner Hand ITC - Regular

Algerian - Regular

Second step - Downloading Rare Fonts

Bickham Script

Third step - Experiments with my initial

Typography

My typography case study are some posters made for Highways agency in order to promote the company.

In the first poster it can be seen the mixture of fonts, colors and sizes which drown a strong message for every driver. The first type used is interesting because it is made from road signs and even the 'A' letter is a sign itself.

The next type is a specific rounded font used for tyre companies' names, yet the fact that is written on a tyre makes the font to be connected to the message.

The third and the fourth are made from traffic signs bracing up the words. The 'check' is typed on a yellow rectangle to be very vesible. The next font has a specific shape and consistency. The word 'weather' is apparently graved in ice, describing a negative factor on being unprepared on the road.

The last one, 'updates', is actually a combination of signs, ending the poster with a related theme to driving.

Following the same topic, the Highway agency advice us in a unique form to check our cars, using tools as letters.

And as an end of the story, here are some of the negative effects of not listening the advice and of course they are transmitted to public through a creative typography.
